Cowl Mounting

Mounting the cowl takes patience.  The plans call for piano hinges at the intersection between the cowl halves and the cowl to firewall.  To make removal easier, we opted for camlocs from Skybolt.  We didn't purchase the kits as we thought hinges would be fine for cowl-cowl connection along the sides.  We used camlocs on the bottom and the curve along the top.

To get the proper spacing from cowl to spinner, we drilled two spacers to the top of the cowl and aligned it with the spinner backplate.  After getting it aligned, we drilled (#40) the cowl to the support strip at the firewall.

To match the two pieces, we drilled temporary holes in the front inside the air intake.

To match the bottom to the top, we fabricated a 4 foot long sanding block from a piece of very straight cherry.  Two temporary tabs were attached to the firewall and we drilled them to the bottom cowl.

Final placement complete.

The next step is to mark and drill the hinges along the remaining seams.
